Beware of Fraud Packers and Movers

Moving fraud is common in Bangalore and it follows a pattern. Here is what it looks like, so you can spot it before your goods are on someone else’s truck.

Warning signs

• A quote far below everyone else. The price goes up once your goods are loaded, and by then you have no choice.
• They want the full amount in advance. No genuine mover asks for this. Twenty to thirty per cent is normal.
• No written quote. If it is only spoken, it can change.
• No office address, or one that does not exist. Check it on Maps before you book.
• Payment to a personal account. Ask for the company account or use UPI to a registered business ID.
• The vehicle has no company name on it. Ask which company is actually doing the job — many “movers” are just brokers.

What to check before booking

1. GST number — ask for it and verify it online
2. The office address on Google Maps, with photos
3. Reviews on Google, not just testimonials on their own website
4. Whether the quote is itemised in writing
5. Whether they will give you a proper bill

If something goes wrong

Keep every message and receipt. File a complaint with the National Consumer Helpline on 1915, and a police complaint if goods are held to ransom. Both work better than people expect.
